Why I do this
THREE DAYS BEFORE MY FIRST BIRTHDAY, I HAD AN UNFORTUNATE ACCIDENT THAT LEFT ME WITH THIRD DEGREE BURNS ON MY SHOULDERS, FACE, NECK AND SCALP. I WAS IN THE HOSPITAL SO LONG I FORGOT HOW TO WALK. AS A CHILD, I WAS CONSTANTLY RIDICULED BY OTHER CHILDREN BECAUSE MY SCARS MADE ME LOOK DIFFERENT. BEING THE SUBJECT OF CONSTANT TEASING AND CRUEL JOKES LEFT A MARK, AND I BECAME VERY SHY AND ISOLATED. THAT ALONG WITH THE MENTAL AND PHYSICAL ABUSE INFLICTED ON ME BY FATHER AND MY STEP-FATHER AND YOU COULD SAY I HAD A DIFFICULT CHILDHOOD.
As I grew older, my scars became less noticeable and I soon realized that being different was not always a bad thing. However, my childhood experiences made it difficult for me to trust people.
When I started in photography, I mostly took photos of nearby scenery and my travels. But ultimately, I was introduced to fine art photography and early in my career, I met the amazing, Giulia Piolanti, my dear friend and muse. Shortly after meeting Giulia I realized that photography was becoming a way of helping me heal those internal scars from my youth.
Photography has played a healing and cathartic role in my life. I will always be grateful and appreciative of those who have helped me along my journey.
In creating my images, I look to find a comfort zone with my models, a place where they can relax and be themselves and feel free to do what comes naturally for them. It’s not my aim to push boundaries or to go beyond personal limits in order to capture my images — clearly the model must be able to trust me.
Building this trust allows me to reclaim and remove my fears about trust from my past. If nothing else comes of this process, what will remain are my images. They are proof that time was spent in a positive and constructive way, to create something special, to reclaim a difficult memory as something positive and constructive.
Any model who wants to join me on this journey is invited to do so. There are no other requirements and I will never judge you based on your measurements. Apply here.
