Why I do this

THREE DAYS BEFORE MY FIRST BIRTHDAY, I HAD AN UNFORTUNATE ACCIDENT THAT LEFT ME WITH THIRD DEGREE BURNS ON MY SHOULDERS, FACE, NECK AND SCALP. I WAS IN THE HOSPITAL SO LONG I FORGOT HOW TO WALK. AS A CHILD, I WAS CONSTANTLY RIDICULED BY OTHER CHILDREN BECAUSE MY SCARS MADE ME LOOK DIFFERENT. BEING THE SUBJECT OF CONSTANT TEASING AND CRUEL JOKES LEFT A MARK, AND I BECAME VERY SHY AND ISOLATED. THAT ALONG WITH THE MENTAL AND PHYSICAL ABUSE INFLICTED ON ME BY FATHER AND MY STEP-FATHER AND YOU COULD SAY I HAD A DIFFICULT CHILDHOOD.

As I grew older, my scars became less noticeable and I soon realized that being different was not always a bad thing. However, my childhood experiences made it difficult for me to trust people.

When I started in photography, I mostly took photos of nearby scenery and my travels. But ultimately, I was introduced to fine art photography and early in my career, I met the amazing, Giulia Piolanti, my dear friend and muse. Shortly after meeting Giulia I realized that photography was becoming a way of helping me heal those internal scars from my youth.

Photography has played a healing and cathartic role in my life. I will always be grateful and appreciative of those who have helped me along my journey.

In creating my images, I look to find a comfort zone with my models, a place where they can relax and be themselves and feel free to do what comes naturally for them. It’s not my aim to push boundaries or to go beyond personal limits in order to capture my images — clearly the model must be able to trust me.

Building this trust allows me to  reclaim and remove my fears about trust from my past. If nothing else comes of this process, what will remain are my images. They are proof that time was spent in a positive and constructive way, to create something special, to reclaim a difficult memory as something positive and constructive.

Any model who wants to join me on this journey is invited to do so. There are no other requirements and I will never judge you based on your measurements. Apply here.

    About me

I am an award-winning fine art photographer and video producer.

I was always fascinated by photography as a child and growing up, but I never really considered it a serious pursuit until 2003, I was 36 at the time.

Prior to that time, I had a successful and growing design career and had held creative director positions with major companies and agencies in Chicago and Zürich. In fact, it was my move to Switzerland in 2000 that changed my appreciation for photography, as sharing images from my own travels was the most effective way to encourage family members to come visit my wife and I.

Since that time, my work has received many awards, including first place in the International Photography Awards, and first place in the Prix de la Photographie Paris. Numerous print and online magazines have published my images. I continue to produce new personal work on a limited basis, my main focus is on my professional, commercial and editorial assignments.

My wife and I lived in Switzerland from 2000-2012. While there, we founded the ViewFinder Center for Photography, Switzerland's only English-language photography school. We also organized my Summer workshops in Tuscany, Italy. I still continue to offer personal coaching and ad-hoc workshops.

    Fine Art

I am always seeking collaborations to expand my fine art portfolio. I have worked with talented models from all over the world, from total beginners to world-renown professionals. To learn more about modeling for me, please apply here.

    The Girl Who Can Fly

Since 2003, I have been working to create a collection of gravity defying images of Giulia Piolanti. Trained as a gymnast, ballet dancer and Cirque du Soleil performer, Giulia combines strength, grace and power in ways others can only imagine.

    Polaroids

Starting in 2010, I have been shooting with Polaroid and Fuji instant film cameras using films from Fuji and the Impossible Project. My interest in instant cameras and films goes back to my early photo days when I started with my first camera, a Polaroid.

    New Models: Fashion

Over the years I have had the opportunity to work in fashion, creating images for designers in Europe and the US. I am always on the look out for new models interested in developing their careers and currently scout for agencies in Europe, New York and Los Angeles.
